I can't believe the week is over!

A week ago we landed in Cartagena, Colombia. Today we start our travel back to Michigan. This week has been a reminder that God has a plan, even when we doubt, even when we have fear, and even when we don't understand.

Each Day it seemed as though He was whispering," I am near! Let me lead, trust me."
On the way to the airport last week, we received an email from our friends Nick and Erin informing us that some of our agenda had changed. Nothing too difficult, working on an Island and teaching an English class for 20 YWAM students.  Honestly we had nothing to do but pray that God would provide since it was too late to purchase any materials.

God provided
Stephany Houseman was a last minute add to our team. Not only is she a teacher but she also came to Colombia when we taught the week long English class 2 years ago! God knew that we needed her!

Next step was arriving in Cartagena and going through customs. Our bags were packed with generous donations of school supplies, hygiene kits, toiletries and lice kits. When they examined our bags the custom officials were suspicious of our intentions and were not going to allow us to bring these items into Colombia. As our team prayed, I began use every bit of Spanish that I knew to ask for their leniency. I knew that this was bigger than I was able to handle and so as I began to ask for their support of our work at El Refugio I also was asking God to make a way for this to happen.  In a moment, everything changed! The woman across from me in the customs uniform politely asked us to bring a letter next time stating what our mission was and who we would be working with. God mad a way! God Provided again!

Spa days were exciting, fun, challenging and humbling. The work was long, but so rewarding. We thought of the people who donated the supplies throughout the day and were so grateful for their partnership with us! We were asked to bring 60 hygiene kits to give to the children after their spa experience. After counting the kits we were so excited that we had brought 70 kits. Little did we know that the response of the community would be so great. After all of the kits had been handed out Max and Stephany realized that there were more children who needed one. They began to rummage through our supplies and created just enough kits for all of the children. God provided just enough!

Thursday, we began our time of teaching English to 20 YWAM students. We arrived at the school and were so excited to be given an air conditioned room. Shortly after we entered into the room we were politely asked to go to another location to teach the class. After we arrived at the new location, I was amazed to see a beautiful outside area that had, shade, tables and lots of room for our conversational activities! God Provided more than I could have imagined!

Thursday afternoon God gave us the greatest gift! We walked through the community of Loma Fresca, where many of the students that attend El Refugio live. It was a desperately poor area. Our hearts were filled with joy and sadness as we prayed with families, smiled and greeted children and were face to face with poverty. How is this a gift? Everything made sense to us concerning the children that we cared for on our spa days. The simple acts of washing feet, hair and hands were a luxury that these children to not get very often. God gave us the gift of understanding His plan to share a loving touch with the children that He loves so much!

What a week! God is good and has a plan for the people of Cartagena! We have been blessed and changed forever!

Spa day 2

We started off the day and headed to El Refugio to continue our work from yesterday. As we did yesterday, we started out with devotions with the staff from there. We were overwhelmed today with the increasing number of people that showed up compared to the number yesterday. The morning started off smoothly, and as the day went on, more and more people showed up. We found ourselves praying for time to get to each and every person, time to "multiply" and allow us to show love to each child and parent who came through the door.

Many team members were stretched out of their comfort zones as tasks needed to be completed. The boys stepped up to paint nails, others worked in the heat touching up paint, and yet others continued the job of washing and de-licing hair. Although the language barrier still exists, we are learning that through creative communication, God has allowed us to speak into their lives while they are definitely speaking into ours.

A very specific way we saw God smiling on us today was the handing out of hygiene kits. Before the trip many people generously donated items such as shampoo, deodorant, hair accessories, cotton swabs, etc. to give to the children of El Refugio. The impact of such a small gift was amazing. As more and more people came in though, the supplies seemed to be dwindling. Toward the end, two of us counted the kids left, counted the kits, pulled together everything we had, and had EXACTLY the right amount. Not too much, not too little. Another reminder that God knew exactly who would walk through those doors and exactly what we would need.

Tonight we talked about how God is molding us into the people He wants us to be. At times we may resist God's molding, but we all shared how this trip was meant for each of us in a unique way, and how God continues to shape us through new opportunities, friendships and experiences.

The spa

Today, in this amazing Country, we spent our day washing hair, painting nails, painting fences, washing feet, making kids smile, and many more great things. Our day was kicked off when we arrived at el refugio and spoke with the Martin and the rest of the stunning el refugio staff. Some of us were in charge of painting an iron fence in front of the refuge, others were interacting with the "customers" of our "spa", some people were washing feet and hands, and all others were scavenging through locks in search of Phthiraptera (Lice). As the kids arrived they were greeted by our lovely hostess' will & Stephanie. After they conversated and colored, they were guided to their second part of their cleansing which was washing their feet, hands, and painting nails which were done by our manicurist'/pedicurists' David, Jake, Rachel, And Aubrey. After they got their nails restored, they were brought to the hair cleaners which were John, Jann, and Tyler. At this point the children and mothers have made new friends, got their feet and hands cleaned, their nails painted, and their hair washed clean of Phthiraptera. You may think that their spa day is over but think again. Their day was capped off by giving each of the kids and mothers a personal hygiene kit which consisted of deodorant, shampoo, soap, toothbrush, toothpaste and much more! You could really see how god was working throughout the day when he brought over 20 women and children to get cleaned and how seeing their face after their cleansing. We concluded our day worshiping with Wilson and of course watching the NCAA finals b-ball game.

Worship in Cartegena

Today, we helped to spread God's kingdom.  Our mission group had the opportunity to preform a skit for the public community of Cartagena. Non-believers stopped and watched our performance.  Our team had the opportunity to communicate with Colombians and share the word of God.  The hope of the churches gathered was that common citizens left changed forever.  We were able to also watch other churches do performances.  Then, we took a break and went to Crepes and Waffles (a restaurant in the city center).

We regenerated our spirts and refueled our bodies.  Finally, we had a chance to worship God.  A band played on a huge stage. There was a massive crowd of many churches and non-believers that were moved and influenced by the Spirit of God.  People were dancing and everyone was worshiping with all their heart, soul, and mind.  We then returned back to the apartment and thanked God for such a blessed day.

Cartegena

We arrived late late last night and slept hearing the waves. We have already seen the goodness of the Lord passing through customs.  He went before us gave us great conversations with the custom officials and blessed us with no problems.

Nick and Erin Glab have been wonderful hosts and have prepared lovely accommodations for us.

The team is excited to get going and are ready for a day of ministry. Pray for us as we go into the city center and perform a drama and minister to people.

We met our cook Celia this morning pray for our conversations with her and that she would feel the love of Christ.

The Refuge

Singing, laughing, giggling voices could be heard all over the community of Torices, Colombia today. Every Friday the Organization, El Refugio has children's church in both the morning and afternoon. Those that attend walk up to 25 minutes to be a part of this high energy, loving environment. Our Hosts Martin and Rosa have prayerfully thought through every detail. Serving with them is an amazing team that assists with many aspects of the day to day ministries and the services.

8:15 after a slightly crazy taxi ride our team arrived, just in time for the morning prayer time. The students from Corinth are quite amazing at jumping right into prayer with anyone! It was discussed that every kind word spoken to these children was important.

After assigning us jobs for the 2 hour program, the children began to arrive. Today's theme is

Tu eres valiente. (You are courageous) This is repeated to every child as they enter the room. They are excited to see Americans and quickly try to speak English. One little boy asked, "Do you have fay boo?" After a few moments, I realized that he was asking about face book.

9:00 and the children have arrived, the music is blaring and the service, more like a party has begun. Breakfast is rice and beans and the children devour it.

Rosa takes the microphone and we are off!  I am delighted by the classroom management that Rosa uses. There are clear directions about behaviour posted and reviewed. The steps to knowing Jesus are also posted. The children repeat the significance to these icons. God loves me, I am a sinner, Jesus died on the cross for my sins, I will live to serve him.

Skits, videos, dancing worship, testimonies, offering and bible reading are all apart of this time. What an amazing time of loving these Children in Jesus name. As the children leave they are reminded that tu eres valiente, porques Jesus contigo. (You are courageouse, because Jesus is with you.) I love that the theme is weaved throughout the program.

We pray for continued blessing on this ministry of love.

Thursday

Today was our “Sabbath Day” so we got to sleep in a little (7:45 a.m.)  After a breakfast of pancakes and fruit, we headed to the monastery, La Popa, to pray over Cartagena and to do our devotions.  La Popa is located on one of the highest points in Cartagena so you can see the entire city below.  On our way up, we passed through Stratus 1, the poorest division of the city.  There was trash everywhere, graffiti on the walls, and the houses were run-down and very small.  When we arrived, we were able to look out and see the unfortunate juxtaposition of the rich and poor areas of Cartagena.

Inside, there were many rooms full of different Catholic artifacts explaining the history of Colombia’s dominant religion.  After exploring the monastery for a little while, we split up into groups of three or four and prayed over Cartagena, specific to the different areas of the city.  We prayed for the protection of the poor people of the city, who live in fear of their homes flooding due to the near-by river.  We also prayed for the richest people of the city that they would realize the extreme need of their neighbors in stratus 1, and that they would be compassionate towards them.
When we finished praying in groups, we had alone time in La Popa to do our daily devotion.  It was great to do devotions in a quiet place where we could really focus on God.  Our Sabbath day proved to be a much needed rest for all of us.  When our group gathered to discuss our devotions together, we also prayed for Aubrey, who had not been feeling well.
Our team then traveled back to our apartment to have lunch.  We made sandwiches! Nothing was planned for our afternoon so we could choose what we wanted to do.  Justin, Tyler, and Bob went to develop some photos.  Many of the leaders took a nap, and most of us girls went to the pool.  Let’s just say we should have put more sunscreen on.  It was nice to a day of relaxing after two days of painting.  At around 3:00 p.m., us students split into equal groups to rehearse the skits we would be giving at El Refugio tomorrow.  The skits depict how you can be courageous and stand up against sin with Jesus.
We had a quick dinner and then at 7:00 p.m. we all left to meet Erin and her friends to serve food to the homeless in the middle of town.  Erin calls them “the homies.” Some of us served food and drinks, others walked around with trash bags, and others yet just mingled and conversed with the people.  We gave out candy to the children, and passed out hats to all.  Before the meal, a brief message about God was given and everyone there circled up and prayed.  It was a very powerful experience to assist these people in such a crucial way.  The homies of Cartagena count on this meal every Thursday.  After food was given, many members of the team were able to get to know the people a little bit and got to pray for them and their specific needs.  We visited with them late into the evening, but we still managed to stop by Burger King afterwards for ice cream!

When we got back to the apartment, we met to share our highs and lows, give testimonies, and to worship.  Mackenzie and Corrie shared their testimonies tonight.  From our peaceful alone time at La Popa, to the feeding of the homeless, our Sabbath day proved to be an overall great day.  We were brought closer to Him at La Popa and He made us even more aware of the need in Cartagena through our time spent with the homies.

Wednesday

This morning, several of us woke up early and ran along the beach.  We could tell already that it was going to be a hot day.  For breakfast, we ate eggs and arepa made by Mari. Arepa is like a cornbread pancake for those who want to know.  After devotions, we headed to El Refugio.  El Refugio is a foundation that serves poor, at risk kids.  This organization is run by Martin Morales.  Since we have gotten to know Martin, we realized that he has a tremendous heart for this mission.  Martin also lives at this location.

Pastor Kevin and Bob went to look at a project on a nearby island.  We arrived at El Rufugio at 9:00.  At El Refugio, we welcomed the kids as they would make their long hike into the foundation.  Some kids walked as long as 30 minutes to get there.

Our mission at El Refugio was to help with arts and crafts.  We were each given a task to complete.  Justin, Whitney, and Brooklyn were responsible for cutting out shapes to put on cards.  Hailey and Aubrey painted a wall.  Lissa Cobb helped make posters.  Mackenzie made attendance charts.  Bonnie and Tyler decorated cards.  Corrie, Rachel, and Brooklyn cut out hearts for Children’s day cards.  Children’s day celebrates all the children in the country.  Elyssa made a sign to welcome the kids.  Then we designed crafts for the theme of courage.  Corrie makes sling shots to represent David and Goliath.  We completed this around 12:30.

We were treated to a fantastic meal that consisted of cheesy rice, chicken, plantations, and vegetables.  We were also given a gift of coffee, candy, and a personalized bookmark.  It was great to sit and talk to Martin and his wife, Rosie.  We each had to tell them a little bit about ourselves in Spanish.  Because our vans did not show up, we decided to take taxis to the school.  Taking a Taxi in Cartagena is a remarkable experience.  The taxi driver with the most guts will get there first.

At Cristiano de Cartagena, again we painted classrooms.  Upon arrival we had to wait 30 minutes, but used that time to interact with the children.    Some enjoyed playing soccer with them.  A 5:00, we returned to the hotel.  We took this time to relax as we waited for the hot dogs and hamburgers to get done cooking for dinner.  Dinner was delicious.  Soon after, Dan and Baret came to the hotel to join our nightly devotions.  They discussed the culture and how God was acting in their lives.  Erin later joined us for our praise time.  She also gave her testimony.  This was the end to great, successful work day.

Every day we are more and more in awe of what God has done in and through us!

Tuesday

This morning, we woke up bright and early to a lovely breakfast made by Mari, our Colombian cook.  After eating delicious pancakes, we had some time to do devotions before we left.  Being so close to the ocean makes devo’s so much more peaceful.  After our morning prayer, we had a rough start because the language barrier caused some confusion with the taxi driver.  However, that was the only minor problem and from there on out, our day was FANTASTIC!
We went to paint at Cristal Rey Church.  The first blessing of the day was that the heat wasn’t nearly as bad as we expected it to be.  We were indoors, so we could feel the breeze while we painted.  Partway through the day, we headed outside to eat an excellent lunch they prepared for us which was fish and coconut rice.

We weren’t used to the scales and bones which are usually taken off in America, but thankfully, they spared us from seeing the fish’s head. In the middle of our lunch, we were taken off guard because the pastor, Jorge, had a parrot that was given a bath in the upstairs window by Jorge’s wife.  She sprayed it with water to clean it, and during the process, he fell down into the courtyard where we were eating.  He couldn’t catch himself because his wings were clipped, but Jorge picked him up and allowed us all to meet him and hold him. His name was Paco!

Another type of animal that we saw throughout the day, which we’ve noticed a lot, is a crazy amount of sick and malnourished dogs roaming the streets. They chill on the beach, in the middle of the road, and wherever else they feel the need to go. It breaks our hearts that we can’t do anything to help them L They’re so cute.

Around 2:00, most of the team went to a Christian school for another painting project, but some of us stayed behind and finished up at the church (Bonnie, Aubrey, and Elyssa).  Jorge and his beautiful family were so blessed by the work we got done today.  We painted the entire inside of the church in just a few hours and built great friendships with this family despite the language barrier.  Before we left, Jorge prayed for us, which was really powerful because even though we couldn’t understand his words, we could feel God’s presence.

Meanwhile, the team at the Christian school has accomplished painting 7 rooms so far, and we’ll be back at it tomorrow painting 4 more rooms. When we first got there, we played soccer with the children while we waited for the rooms to be ready for us to paint. We had conversations with the older teenagers who had learned in school how to speak English. It was nice to speak to people who know our language, but it was also hard to relate because their culture is so different. For example, the only time they ever play soccer is with friends; they don’t have any school sports.  Also, while painting, it was nice getting to know one another and how each of us have come to God.  Our group gets along so well; we are truly blessed to have each other! Every night we come together to debrief, talk about highs and lows and of course worship together!

April 1st

Hey everyone! So today we thought it would be super fun to go to the Russian Circus on Ice, so we did! Then we decided to relax by the beach and go zip lining through the jungle; it was beautiful!! Then we finished up our day by going to a movie in the beautiful theatre around the corner. JUST KIDDING! April Fools!! Today was truly an amazing day though. We took an hour and a half drive to Barranquilla and spent our day at the school, La Rosa De Saron. The unique thing about this school is that it is one of the only private Christian schools in the area, and it is totally free for students to attend. We got to go class to class and try to have conversations with the children.

The school ranges from pre-school to 11th grade. They were all so excited to see us and wanted nothing more but to talk and take LOTS of pictures with us.. they were adorable! We also had fun bringing 100 stuffed animals to the preschoolers, who were in disbelief that they were gifts for them. One other amazing opportunity we had was to sit down and do a group activity with the teachers of the school. They knew minimal to no English, and many of us didn’t know much Spanish. We paired up with a teacher and with our language barrier, had to learn how to introduce each other in each other’s language. It was an awesome experience. At the end we put them in the middle and surrounded them and prayed but when we were done, God moved them to pray for us. Most of us had no idea what they were saying but it was really moving. Even with the language barrier we really felt a connection with one another in the sense that we all share the love for God.

My personal favorite part of the day was getting to give the stuffed animals to the children. To see their faces light up the way they did was something I will never forget. We couldn’t speak together but we would make the animal noises together and it was fun J (Mackenzie Henry).

Today God blessed us all in so many ways, but God really blessed me personally by allowing me to meet Isabel. Isabel was a woman in her mid-40’s who was a single mother. She had 3 kids ranging from the ages of 5-8. She was such an awesome woman. I could just feel God’s love radiating from her. I was so glad I was able to communicate with her in her native tongue. She was able to teach me more Spanish and I tried to teach her a little bit of English. In the end she shared with me that her brothers and cousins were in the US and how much she missed them. She was very upset that she can’t communicate with them because they only speak English and she only speaks Spanish. She asked me if I could maybe help her translate letters to her brothers and cousins. Unfortunately I wasn’t able to do that today, but God moved me to help her. Somehow I want to be able to help her one day communicate with her family once again. (Whitney Krieger J)

Happy Easter

Happy Easter everyone! We appreciate all your prayers.
Today we all put on our Sunday best to go to the church. The church was very theatric, and had a group of teenagers (jovenes) putting on skits, to represent Easter. Praise God that the pastor who spoke was originally from Houston, Texas and was able to translate everything into English, for us ringos. Later we found out that that was the first time English had ever been spoken or translated in that church. God sure does spoil us!

This video is from the church we visited.
After church, we went into the main city and split up into groups. Each group had 5 places in the city, which we had to take pictures with, and then get back to the hotel by 4:30. My group was fortunate enough to pick up a local, who helped us cheat the game a little. He brought us to every place, and he argued with the store owners so we could get the price we could. Kevin stuck through it, with us girls, as we stopped at all the shops to get new Colombian trinkets. Our new Colombian friend, Delimiro Martinez, was the highlight of my day. He was so kind, and shared all his stories of his traveling. The city was so beautiful. It was nothing even close to anything in Michigan.
We thank God today for giving us the luxury of English in the Colombian church today, and such beautiful weather. We also thank God for the fellowship happening in the group. Again, we appreciate all your prayers, and we will keep you updated on more adventures throughout the week!

First blessings

We received our first gift today. When we arrived in Bogota it was necessary to rebook our luggage. At first the gate agent informed us that we would need to repay for our 5 extra bags. When we got ready to pay she said, "it's ok you don't have to pay anything!! God is so good!!

We know that He will supply all of our needs! Philippians 4:19

We are walking and ministering in this truth!

Can't wait to share with you more!!

TEACHING IN COLOMBIA

The plan was to provide professional development of teaching strategies and English instruction to a group of teachers for 3 days. The team was prepared, eager and ready to go. What we learned about ourselves and others was the true gift of this journey.

Day 1
Our time together began with the basics;
the alphabet
vowel sounds
colors
songs
etc.

On the wall was a list of strategies that we added to as they were introduced. Many countries use a lecture format during class instruction, we wanted to acquaint them with some SIOP strategies to help students retain information!

We were pleasantly surprised at how "into it" the 20 plus teachers were.

While teaching there were many times that I wondered if they thought that we were just plain crazy!

Day 2
All of the teachers came back! After a review the focus was on body parts, vowel sounds, family words, sequencing and sorting. Today was a little different than the first day, about 1/2 hour into the instruction the heavens opened, and the rain fell and fell and fell! The electricity went out, did I mention the hot temperature in Colombia and the humidity? The students scrambled to open windows and as they did the water began to pour into the building, onto the floor and quickly flowing towards all of our supplies, that were so nicely laid out! Now our team was scrambling! Someone turned to me and asked if we should cancel the day and send everyone home. "No way"!

The class simply took a break and moved outside under the covered patio. One of our team members brought a set of Bal-a-Vis-X balls with her. Everyone had a great time using these balls.  I am not sure which was cooler, the rhythmic sound of the balls or the amazing rain storm splashing all around us!

After the rain finished we returned to the inside instruction and continued to teach without electricity. Praise God that there was a breeze! Our last strategy of the day was rotating centers. The groups of students rotated through four centers learning and practicing English.

Loved this day! I kept thinking that the people of Barranquilla must live with this torrential rain system all of the time. Recently I saw this video of what happens here, terrifying and eye opening.

Day 3,
On this day the students came to us. The Lord had provided a comfortable, beautiful home for us to stay in.  The teachers would come for instruction and then stay for lunch. Many arrived a half an hour early! This was to be our final day of teaching with them and we wanted it to be spectacular!
The focus today was on the use of pronouns, this, that, these and those, foods, Rosetta Stone and conversational practice.

The students were excited to use the words that they had learned and often called one of the team over to help with pronunciations. It felt good to see the planning and prayer fulfilling the purposes that we had hoped for!

As our time was winding down, My husband, the team leader approached me and asked if we wanted to teach a 4th day. Originally this was what I wanted to do. Now in the moment, I was stressed out thinking about all of the logistics.  I know that I gave him the "What?" freak out stare! The team quickly agreed and we planned on regrouping and preparing that evening. Immediately, my mind went into planning and controlling mode. Within 10 minutes everything changed. Instead of tomorrow, we were asked to teach the 4th session right after lunch!

Gulp, breathe, don't freak out, I told myself.

This required a few moments with the team. As I broke the news to them, they were amazing. Let's do it! they all rallied together.  This would require the good old teacher stretch and pull it out method that all teachers understand! So much for planning time! Within 3 minutes we had the whole session planned out! Praise God!

In that moment, my daughter also a teacher turned to me, looked me straight in the eyes and admonished me, "You're not going to like this, but remember how you wanted to teach 4 sessions and you were not happy that we only had 3? Well Maybe God is saying, Here is your 4th session. It's on my terms not yours." She was so right!  As usual God was teaching me to let Him be in control.

Teaching session 4
After a fabulous lunch of chicken, coconut rice and vegetables we returned to the classroom. I was excited to see how God was going to pull us through this time together!

So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand. Isaiah 41:10

Who knew that playing memory would be so much fun? Our culminating activity was conversational centers. Using, scrabble, comprehension  questions, fluency practice, sentence construction and answering questions to solidify the English language acquisition.  Session 4 was by far the best one! The students were so enthusiastic. As a teacher it is extremely rewarding to teach those who desire to learn.

During our session reflection, our team was showered with compliments, hugs of appreciation and hearts that had become knit together. We are already planning a return trip.
